Small Business owners
I will be writing my paper about small business owners in waterloo il, I will be trying to interview Papa Vito’s Pizza, J-Fires, Galihagers Restaurant. People always think that owning your own business is extremely easy and that anyone can do it, I will be interviewing each owner of these three business about the bonuses and the down side of owning your own business. Just because each one of these restaurants are owned by a single family or person doesn’t mean that they serve similar or the same kind of food.
The only thing that makes these places similar is that they are made up and owned by a local persons who live in waterloo. Each menu has a different feel to it because the restaurants are all equally different. One of them is known for their pizza, salads, and sandwiches. Another is known for their steaks and seafood with a Cajun twist, and another is just known for their steaks and good drink specials. The sizes of each place also make a big difference between each one, one is about the size of our classroom if not smaller, while the others each have some outdoor seating and multiple levels giving them the ability to sit and feed more people.
The myths that surround small business owners appear to be that of success in the community. Most people believe that restaurant owners make a lot of money and they have an enjoyable career. People tend to forget the stress and pressure the owner places upon one’s self to succeed. Not only do they depend upon success but their employees and distributors also depend on them to succeed. Failure of one means failure for all.
I think it’s very difficult for most people to understand the many hours a small business owner puts in every day to survive. They are responsible for food preparation, scheduling, payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, banking, cleaning, customer service, equipment repair, and every aspect of the day to day responsibilities. Being a restaurant you have to be open 7 days a week for your customers. Adding the bar atmosphere adds hours to your day as it adds liabilities to your business. A 9 to 5 job is not what you get when you own your own business. Weekends belong to the business. Vacations are not paid, holidays are not taken when running your own business.
I find this difficult for me to grasp as just going to school is a full time job for me. I think most business people need a strong family commitment to succeed. I think everyone in the family has different jobs they need to fulfill in order to survive. Most restaurants appear to be a family ran and younger children are thrown into the mix early in life. They continue to climb the ladder and move from small jobs early in life to becoming a major part of the business later in life.
I believe that becoming an entrepreneur is an inherited life style. It’s very scary to go from a life of receiving a pay check to being the person that writes them. It takes a special class of people to believe they can overcome the odds and succeed.
